Behind the wheel
Driver information
For non-residents, tourists or locals, it is enough to present a driver's license from the country of origin or an international driver's license.
Driving a vehicle under the following conditions is prohibited:
- Intoxicated state of the driver.
- Absence of legal permission to drive.
- Under 18 years of age.
- Without a seat belt: all drivers and passengers must wear seat belts, and all motorcyclists must wear helmets. Children under four years old must be in a child seat. You cannot use your cell phone while driving.
Fines
In case of violation of these rules, you will be required to pay a fine imposed by the traffic laws of the Dominican Republic.
Speed limits
Speed limits exist. You should not drive more than 120 km/h on highways and 80 km/h on other roads. On country roads, fields or inner cities, slow down to 40 km/h, because children play in the streets.
